Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To examine the range of international organisations that influence global politics, and to assess their role in running the global political economy.

Syllabus:

The origins of international organisations, and their place in liberal internationalist thought; the successes and failures of the League of Nations system; the United Nations system and its internal processes; regional organisations; non-governmental organisations and global governance; international organisations and the search for political and military security; functional-technical cooperation at the regional and global level; global governance and the post-Cold War global political economy.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Identify and explain the main approaches to the study of IOs Identify the major IOs and their interrelationships Demonstrate a proficiency in library and information-gathering skills Demonstrate a proficiency in planning and writing essays

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Question the roles and effectiveness of the main IOs. Judge the different ideological underpinnings of different types of IOs

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Demonstrate advanced competence in verbally articulating an argument

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module is a combination of lectures and tutorials. The lectures give the students an understanding of IOs and their place in international politics. The tutorials give the students a chance to discuss and question the role of IOs. Assessment will be mainly by essay and exam.
